چکیده

The nonlinearity inherent in the Traveling Wave Tube (TWT) amplifier distorts amplified signals and results in reduced efficiency and bandwidth, limiting its use in communication and electronic countermeasure applications. Signal predistortion is an effective technique for suppressing nonlinear distortion in TWTs that provides high suppression and requires simple circuits for implementation. While conventional presitortion linearizers are based on third-order intermodulation (3IM) injection, this paper proposes using second-order (secondharmonic) signal injection in predistortion circuits. A detailed experimental investigation and comparison of second-order vs. third-order signal predistortion is presented. It is observed that both schemes result in suppression of up to 30 dB (55 dBc) for the 3IM distortion products. However, experimental results indicate that second-harmonic signal injection performs better than 3IM in suppressing higher-order products. The paper also investigates spatial evolution of the wave spectrum along the TWT axis with and without injection, and sensitivity of the suppression to injected signal’s amplitude, phase and the fundamental frequency.

Experimental Investigation of Twt Nonlinearities and Distortion Suppression by Signal Injection

Traveling Wave Tube (TWT) amplifiers are high power, often broadband microwave amplifiers used extensively in satellite communications and electronic countermeasures. While the high-power outputs and wide gain-bandwidths make TWTs ideally suited for these purposes, the nonlinearity of these devices results in amplitude, phase and spectral distortion. Nonlinear distortion products appear as harm...

Second Harmonic Reduction of Traveling Wave Tube Amplifier Using Ferrite Material

Traveling Wave Tubes (TWTs) consist of different elements. The most important element of TWT is the RF circuit. RF circuits in helix TWTs need a dielectric support to hold the helix; this support also has an effect in electromagnetic properties of RF circuits. A novel dielectric support is proposed to reduce the second harmonic of helix TWTs. The dielectric support in this structure consists of...

Injection schemes for TWT Linearization

Traveling Wave Tube (TWT) amplifiers, used in communication and ECM applications for their high power output, are nonlinear devices. This leads to harmonic and intermodulation distortion in the output spectrum which compromises the device performance. In communication systems, intermodulation products (IMPs) lead to adjacent channel interference while in ECM applications, harmonic generation ad...

Nonlinear Distortion and Suppression in Traveling Wave Tubes: Insights and Methods

Traveling Wave Tubes (TWTs) are microwave and millimeter wave amplifiers used in radar, satellite communications, and electronic countermeasure applications. On a satellite, the TWT provides the final communications signal boost before transmitting the signal back to earth. In electronic countermeasures, TWTs boost signals that are sent out to deny detection by an enemy radar. The TWT, as with ...

An analytical framework for CDMA systems with a nonlinear amplifier and AWGN

The design of code-division multiple-access (CDMA) transmission systems for satellite communications requires an appropriate consideration of the distortion effects due to on-board nonlinear amplification. The aim of this paper is to provide an analytical framework for the evaluation of the in-band nonlinear distortion effects on the performance of CDMA systems. Both synchronous systems with or...
